Reclaiming big-wave legacy for a new generation

Dungeons earned its reputation through the surfers who first dared to paddle into Africa’s most unforgiving wave. Their courage proved what was possible and laid the foundation for the first Red Bull Big Wave Africa event. Cape Courage carries that legacy forward, giving a new generation of Cape big-wave surfers a platform to earn their place in the line up.

Concept

The surfer at the centre

Two converging swell lines form the foundation of the mark, overlapping to reveal a surfboard at their centre. Beginning as two opposing C forms, the symbol captures Cape Courage, the shifting nature of Dungeons and the individual surfer positioned within its force.

Identity

Built from the conditions

The visual system takes its cues directly from Dungeons. A swell-forecast palette moves from cooler blues through yellow, red and black as conditions intensify, while heavy typography, shifting alignments, raw textures and powerful surf photography capture the unpredictability and scale of the wave without sacrificing the credibility of a world-class event.

Expression

A platform surfers could own

Across the website, social channels and event merchandise, the identity became a platform for both preserving Dungeons’ history and building its next chapter. The revival immediately prompted recognition of the original event while giving organisers a flexible system for creating ongoing event content themselves.
